Healing from trauma requires approaches that honor the whole person and that support the nervous system with gentle, evidence informed care. At Sabino Recovery, trauma processing techniques are an essential part of our trauma first residential model. Each modality is selected with intention, and every client participates in a treatment plan that is co created around their individual needs, strengths, and personal healing goals.
Our calm, private desert retreat provides an ideal environment for deep work. With more than ten one on one sessions each week and a wide range of mind body therapies, clients receive compassionate support as they work through the experiences that shaped their lives.

Trauma processing techniques are therapeutic approaches designed to help you safely access, understand, and integrate overwhelming experiences stored in the mind and body. These modalities support you in:
- Regulating your nervous system
- Reducing the emotional charge of traumatic memories
- Releasing stored survival responses
- Reconnecting with a sense of presence and safety
At Sabino Recovery, trauma processing is always approached with compassion, choice, and respect. You move at your own pace, supported by experienced clinicians who create a deeply nurturing environment.
Why Sabino Uses Multiple Trauma Processing Methods
No single path fits every person who has experienced trauma. For this reason, we offer several techniques that work in different but complementary ways. Each method supports unique aspects of the healing process, and together they create a comprehensive framework for nervous system regulation, emotional integration, and personal transformation.
The three primary trauma processing techniques offered at Sabino Recovery are:
- Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR)
- Brainspotting
- The NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM)
Releasing trauma held in the brainstem and survival system
Deep Brain Reorienting Therapy, also known as DBR, is a neuroscience based approach that focuses on releasing trauma that has been stored within the brainstem and the survival system. Many people continue to carry the effects of trauma because the body was never able to complete the instinctive responses that were triggered during overwhelming events. DBR helps the nervous system recognize these early patterns and gently resolve them.
During a DBR session, the therapist guides you to notice subtle sensations, micro movements, and emotional signals that reflect the original moment of distress. As the nervous system reconnects with these early responses in a safe therapeutic environment, it becomes possible to complete the unfinished survival reactions and restore a sense of internal balance.
Benefits of DBR
- Reduced hypervigilance and emotional reactivity
- Relief from somatic symptoms (tension, headaches, heaviness)
- Greater emotional stability
- A renewed sense of internal safety
This method is particularly supportive for those who have found traditional talk therapy overwhelming or insufficient, since DBR works beneath conscious thought.
Accessing and resolving trauma through the brain–body connection
Brainspotting is a focused trauma therapy that identifies specific points in the visual field, known as brainspots, that activate emotional or somatic material connected to trauma. When your eyes land on these points, your nervous system naturally accesses deeper layers of experience that may not be reachable through talk therapy alone.
By maintaining gentle focus on a brainspot, the brain begins to process unresolved pain and release the emotional charge associated with it. This approach relies on the brain’s natural ability to reorganize and integrate experiences in a safe and grounded way.
Benefits of Brainspotting
- Deep emotional processing at a comfortable pace
- Reduced PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and depressive patterns
- Increased clarity, resilience, and nervous system regulation
- Support for chronic pain linked to unprocessed stress
Brainspotting can be especially helpful for individuals who feel “stuck” or who have difficulty accessing emotions through traditional talk therapy.
Healing developmental and relational trauma
The NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) is a therapeutic approach designed for individuals impacted by developmental or complex trauma. NARM explores the connection between early relational experiences and present-day emotional patterns, helping clients understand and transform long-standing survival strategies.
NARM works with both cognitive insight and the body’s response patterns, supporting reconnection to core needs such as trust, attunement, and autonomy.
Benefits of NARM
- Healing attachment wounds and relational patterns
- Strengthening emotional regulation
- Reducing shame, self-criticism, and disconnection
- Promoting genuine connection with self and others
NARM is particularly effective for those seeking to understand how childhood experiences influence adult behaviors, beliefs, and relationships.
