Depression and Anxiety Residential Center
Depression and anxiety are often linked and difficult to treat separately. The Sabino Recovery staff is well-versed in the latest research regarding causes and solutions to depression and anxiety. We are able to offer education and compassion through evidence-based interventions and specific treatment plans. By utilizing allopathic and naturopathic medicine in conjunction with psychotherapy, we can offer the best possible outcomes for recovery.
Depression and anxiety are exacerbated by unresolved trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drug and alcohol use. Together we can uncover the underlying causes of your mental health challenges and develop a treatment plan tailored to address these.
By understanding the mental and physiological causes of these disorders, our residents are better equipped to find a solution to these debilitating diseases.
What Research and Experience Tell Us About Depression:
- Experiencing childhood trauma is linked to depression later in life.
- There is a strong link between serious alcohol use and depression.
- PTSD and trauma often do lead to depression, and their symptoms may overlap.
- Other risk factors, such as gender and genetic predispositions can increase someone’s likelihood of developing depression.
- Chronic and more severe depression responds better to a combination of medication and therapy.
Substance abuse often goes hand-in-hand with other mental health issues such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, PTSD, and other related disorders. This is known as “co-occurring,” or is sometimes referred to as “dual diagnosis.” Many facilities offer treatment for co-occurring disorders, but focus solely on alcohol and drugs and fail to address the complexities and treatment of these subsequent diagnoses.
People who abuse substances are more likely to suffer from depression and/or anxiety. Oftentimes people who are depressed or anxious may drink or abuse drugs to lift their mood or escape from feelings of fear, guilt, and despair. However, substance abuse can increase feelings of sadness and fatigue which fuel depressive episodes. Furthermore, the toll alcohol and drug use take on a person’s body and emotions can make anxiety worse and make it more difficult for people to naturally react to environmental stimuli. Conversely, people who struggle with addiction can experience depression and anxiety as they work to cope with the consequences of their addiction.
Our Residential Inpatient Depression and Anxiety Treatment Approach:
At Sabino Recovery, depression is so prevalent among those seeking treatment that we have created the systems and tools that we need to provide substantial assessments, therapies, and treatment modalities for depression and anxiety.
Our residential inpatient treatment center is situated on a breathtaking 140 acres of land in Tucson, AZ and provides a luxury environment. This relaxing, safe environment gives our residents the time, support, and surroundings they need to truly heal while receiving the most advanced therapy available.
Nearly everything that is included in our program and your treatment plan works to heal these devastating and even life-threatening conditions.
Individualized Treatment Plan
Your treatment plan is developed around your very specific needs. There are no “treatment tracks,” which means your treatment plan is developed after you arrive. This individualization is especially important for those who have co-occurring addiction and mental health issues because everyone’s background, life experiences, and diagnosis are different.
Experiential & Movement Therapies
We build your treatment plan to include experiential therapies such as art and movement therapy, fitness, nature walks, and yoga. We also offer adventure and equine therapy at our own ropes course and horse stables right on the property. These modalities complement our other group and individual therapies because they have mood-enhancing benefits that can be very helpful for people with depressive and anxiety disorders by helping them learn to express their emotions in healthy ways.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR treatment is most often used to treat trauma but is also helpful for treating depression and anxiety. Usually, people who respond well to EMDR have experienced a major trauma such as physical or sexual abuse in childhood; a serious accident; a natural disaster such as a hurricane or flood; or an unnatural event such as witnessing a murder.
Researchers have also found that EMDR is an effective treatment for prolonged stress that could cause depression. This includes growing up with alcoholism, dealing with infidelity, living in poverty, or living with mental illness in the family.
Neuroscience is at the core of our program. All of our treatment programs and modalities are designed to help our brains rewire themselves to a healthier state. Through a process called ‘neuroplasticity,’ our brain structure and function remodel themselves based on its experiences and repeated thoughts, called ‘neuroplasticity.’ Our brains are affected by our life experiences, our behavior, and thought patterns, which means that what you experience and how you behave daily can have measurable effects on your brain structure and function.
With a mental illness like depression or anxiety, your brain’s neuroplasticity is working against you by reinforcing emotions such as shame, fear, and resentment. As part of treatment, we reinforce positive experiences and thought patterns to help your brain create new, positive neural pathways. Every treatment modality and experience that we provide is designed to create new thought patterns and tools to build a healthier “state of the brain.”
We also offer a technique called neurofeedback treatment that more actively teaches people to control their brain waves and create new neural pathways. At Sabino Recovery, people with depression are taught neurofeedback techniques that allow them to activate parts of the brain involved in generating positive emotions. This can help lessen some symptoms associated with depression and anxiety.
Medication and Naturopathic Solutions
We utilize both naturopathic medicine and allopathic, or Western medicine. Our psychiatric provider will work with your current medications if they are providing appropriate results, or we will work with you and your providers to find different options or additions to your prescriptions. Because our medical director is a naturopath and the use of nutraceuticals is promoted and provided we can also work to include nutraceuticals and other holistic measures to boost mood.
Your treatment plan will include both naturopathic and allopathic, or Western medicine. Our psychiatric provider works with you to find the best results, whether your current medications are working well or they need to find different options. Our medical director encourages the use of nutraceuticals so that holistic options are also incorporated.
Depression and anxiety rates have risen exponentially over the last 40 years. This statistic correlates with the number of processed foods we consume and the pesticides we use to grow our food. Proper nutrition has been linked to decreased rates of anxiety and depression.
The food at Sabino Recovery is delicious, comforting, and healthy. Since we make everything in-house, our residents can immediately improve their diets by consuming truly healthy foods and reducing heavily processed and sugary foods. Research has shown that these diet improvements may be effective at relieving many mental health symptoms.
