RESIDENTIAL AND OUTPATIENT DEPRESSION TREATMENT
One of the most common concerns that our residents seek treatment for is depression.
What Research and Experience Tell Us About Depression:
1. Experiencing childhood trauma is linked to depression later in life.
2. There is a strong link between serious alcohol use and depression.
3. PTSD and trauma often do lead to depression, and their symptoms may overlap.
4. Other risk factors, such as female gender and genetic dispositions, further increase vulnerability for depression.
5. Chronic and more severe depression responds better to a combination of medication and therapy.
Depression and “Co-Occurring”
Substance abuse is often experienced with other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This is known as “co-occurring,” or is sometimes referred to as “dual diagnosis.” Many facilities offer treatment for co-occurring disorders, but many of these are actually drug or alcohol rehab facilities that do not have programming that truly address the needs of those with depression.
People who abuse substances are more likely to suffer from depression. Sometimes, people who are depressed may drink or abuse drugs to lift their mood or escape from feelings of fear, anxiety, guilt or despair. However, drugs and alcohol can increase feelings of sadness and fatigue which are symptoms of depression. Conversely, people who struggle with addiction can experience depression as they work to cope with how the addiction has impacted their lives.
Alcohol is a depressant, so drinking will only make depression worse. People who are depressed and drink too much have more frequent and severe episodes of depression and are more likely to think about suicide.
Our Residential Depression Treatment Approach:
At Sabino Recovery depression is so prevalent among those seeking treatment that we have “baked in” substantial assessments, therapies, and treatment modalities for the treatment of depression. Our residential depression center is situated on a breathtaking 100 acres of land in Tucson, AZ and provides a luxury environment. This relaxing, safe environment allows our residential depression clients the time, support and surroundings needed to truly heal while receiving the most advanced therapy available today.
Nearly everything that is included in our program and your care plan works to heal this devastating and even life-threatening condition.
Individualized Treatment Plan
Your treatment plan is developed around your very specific needs. There are no “treatment tracks,” which means your treatment plan is developed after you arrive. This individualization is especially important for those who have co-occurring issues as your background, experiences, and diagnosis are not like anyone else. At Sabino Recovery, your treatment plan will be too.
Experiential & Movement Therapies
We build your treatment plan with a full-compliment of experiential therapies that include art and movement therapy, fitness, nature walks, and yoga. Plus, we offer adventure and equine therapy at our own ropes course and horse stables right on the property. These modalities are an important adjunct to our other group and individual therapies as they have mood-enhancing benefits that can be very helpful to individuals with depressive and anxiety disorders and also help facilitate healthier expression of emotions.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR treatment is most often used to help those suffering from trauma but can be very helpful to those who are living with depression. Typically, individuals who might find relief from EMDR for depression include those who have experienced a major trauma such as physical or sexual abuse in childhood; a serious accident; a natural disaster such as a hurricane or flood; or an unnatural event such as witnessing a murder. Researchers have also found EMDR effective for treatment of prolonged stress that may be causing depression, such as growing up with alcoholism, surviving ongoing or multiple affairs, or living in poverty or with mental illness in the family.
At Sabino Recovery neuroscience is at the core of our program. Every therapy and modality is designed to assist the brain in rewiring itself to a healthier state of being. This is done through the ongoing remodeling of brain structure and function, called ‘neuroplasticity. Your brain is affected by life experiences, your behavior, as well as your thought patterns, which means that what you experience and how you behave on a day-to-day can have measurable effects on your brain structure and function.
Conditions such as depression can be thought of as negative neuroplasticity. Conversely, just as negative experiences can adversely affect the brain, positive experiences can induce new, positive neural pathways. Every experience we provide is designed to provide those positive experiences, new thought patterns, and tools to behave to create a new and healthier “state of the brain.”
We also offer a technique, called neurofeedback treatment, which involves teaching people to control their own brain waves. At Sabino Recovery, people with depression are taught neurofeedback techniques that allow them to activate parts of the brain involved in generating positive emotions which may be able to lower depressive symptoms.
Medication and Naturopathic Solutions
We utilize both naturopathic medicine and allopathic, or Western medicine. Our psychiatric provider will work with your current medications if they are providing appropriate results, or we will work with you and your providers to find different options or additions to your prescriptions. Because our medical director is a naturopath and the use of nutraceuticals is promoted and provided we can also work to include nutraceuticals and other holistic measures to boost mood.
The food at Sabino Recovery is delicious, comforting and healthy. Since we make everything in-house, residents can easily improve their diets by increasing consumption of truly healthy foods and reducing heavily processed and sugary foods. Research has shown that these diet improvements may be effective at relieving depression.
